Route description

The 31km mountain race takes place within the Etna Park.

The route is a circular route, with departure and arrival at the La Ginestra refuge in Monte Concilio.

The first stretch winds along the “CAI Path 754 Monte Concilio Monte Gemmellaro”, on a dirt road, crosses the 2001 lava flow and is quite fast with alternating climbs and descents.

Continuing uphill, you cross the wooded area of Monte Grosso and then pass near the volcanic vents of the 1886 eruption.

Once past Monte Gemmellaro, a single-track begins on a lava surface up to the base of Monte Nero.

Here begins a challenging climb, inside a chestnut grove, which after a 7.7km race will take the athletes to the lava desert of the Silvestri Craters (1,900m above sea level).

Continue uphill on a sandy surface, continuing inside a larch pine forest, along the “Sentiero Italia CAI 704 Piano Vetore Piano dell’Acqua” until you reach the view over the Valle del Bove, the heart of Etna .

Along the ridge along the immense valley on single track, with a view of the Summit Craters, Taormina and Calabria, you climb along the “CAI 703 Schiena dell’Asino path” up to an altitude of 2,230m above sea level.

From here the descent begins along sandy gullies up to an altitude of 1,950m and then goes up along the route of the 4×4 trucks, on a dirt road, until reaching the arrival station of the cable car (altitude 2,500m above sea level).

After the halfway point of the race, an adrenaline-filled descent begins along the “Canalone degli Svizzeri”, a sandy area of approximately 1.5km with negative slopes of around 35%. Along this descent you can admire a breathtaking panorama overlooking the Gulf of Catania and beyond, in particular from the highest point of the Silvestri Superiore Crater.

Returning to the steps towards Monte Nero, on single track, you cross the lava flow downhill again and deviating towards Monte Gemmellaro you descend to the minimum altitude of the route (1,190m above sea level).

From here for another 5km up and down until the last stretch, on a fairly fast dirt road, you reach the finish line.
